Relationships in a food web
PREDATION
When one organism eats another organism to get its nutrients. A ladybug preys on an aphid. The aphid is killed by the ladybug and the ladybug eats the aphid. |
COMPETITION
When more than one organism competes for the same food. A vulture and a mountain lion compete over food. |
MUTUALISM
When the interaction between two organisms are beneficial to each other. The bird is feeding on the leeches, and the alligator is getting its mouth cleaned of blood-sucking leeches. Both animals BENEFIT from this relationship. |
COMMENSALISM
When the interaction benefits one organism, but does not harm or hurt the other. The birds are following the elephants so they can eat the bugs the elephants disturb. The elephants will also lead the birds to a water source. The birds BENEFIT in this relationship while the elephants NEITHER BENEFITS OR IS HARMED by the relationship. |
PARASITISM
When the interaction benefits one organism, but hurts the other organism. The mosquito drinks the blood of humans. The humans are HARMED by this relationship but the mosquito BENEFITS |
